In order to fight for a clean Dormagen and to free the environment surrounding the Rhine from illegal waste desposals, the participants of the current Erasmus Plus project „Sustainable Living and Traveling in the EU“ took part in the sustainability campaign „World Clean Up Day“ on 21.9.2019. We managed to remove approximately 2 tons of polluting litter, including old car and truck tyres, various pieces of clothing, a shopping trolley and many other environmentally harmful objects from the river. Sea as well as river pollution by litter affects the marine biodiversity by destroying the habitats of many animals and causes their death through swallowing microplastics and other toxic chemical-produced particles. By ingesting microplastic particles the toxins may also enter the food chain and harm the human organism.
